Throughout 2012, Melbourne Zoo celebrated its 150 year anniversary with thousands of Victorian families.
Melbourne Zoo has come a long way since its humble beginnings as an Acclimatisation Society and today we are proud to be a much-loved Melbourne icon and one of the and best known city zoos in the world.
We commemorated the special birthday with a whole year of special events and enjoyed looking back on our long history as well as hearing from our visitors their special memories of the Zoo.
The major events for the year included a huge line-up of Twilights, a special book launch, a Gala Ball, a Comedy Debate, special performances from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, an invite-only Wild Picnic and launches of two new interactive kids exhibits at Melbourne Zoo.
The two flagship events for the anniversary year, Mali in my School and Mali in the City were a great success raising over $450,000 to go towards the Zoo's conservation efforts. A big thanks to all the schools, artists and sponsors involved.
While the milestone was a wonderful way to engage our community and supporters in our special celebration, it also had a higher purpose to fight the extinction of threatened species through raising critical funds for Zoos Victoria's breeding and conservation work.
We were overwhelmed with public support for our 150th Anniversary and we'd like to thank everyone involved for helping to make 2012 a very memorable year.
In particular, Zoos Victoria would like to acknowledge City of Melbourne, our Community Partner and ANZ, our major Financial Partner in 2012.
