Wildlife Conservation & Science

Zoos Victoria's animal collection provides the foundation for the organisation's conservation activities.

One of the collection’s key components is delivering conservation outcomes in the field, whether it is through a breeding program for the reintroduction of animals to the wild or helping developing communities to protect biodiversity.

Zoos Victoria believes everyone has a role to play in wildlife conservation and encourages people to become acquainted with its animal collection to find out how different species are:

  • Acting as ‘flagships’ for nature by highlighting environmental threats and possible solutions
  • Increasingly reliant on ex situ population maintenance for their long-term survival – Zoos Victoria is actively involved in priority conservation regions in Australia, South-East Asia, Papua New Guinea and Africa
  • Part of priority reintroduction or translocation programs

Endangered species are a major concern for Zoos Victoria. Its three properties are involved in campaigns to raise awareness for these animals and the associated environmental issues and to inspire people to take action.
