Zoos Victoria is currently focusing its frog conservation efforts on three endangered species identified as national priorities in the Amphibian Action Plan developed by ARAZPA (Australasian Regional Association of Zoological Parks and Aquaria).
This Critically Endangered species is only found in alpine areas of Mount Kosciosko, in southern New South Wales, and the Chytrid fungus is a major threat to its survival.
Program objectives: Develop a captive breeding program at both Healesville Sanctuary and Melbourne Zoo to produce an ‘insurance population’ that can be re-introduced into areas where it formerly occurred.
Spotted Tree Frog Litoria spenceri
This Critically Endangered species is native to mountain streams of NE Victoria and southern New South Wales. Major threats to this species are predation by introduced trout and Chytrid fungus.
Program objectives: Develop a captive breeding program for the Spotted Tree Frog, initially at Healesville Sanctuary and potentially later at Melbourne Zoo as well, with a view to re-introducing the species into Victorian streams where it formerly occurred.
Southern Barred Frog Mixophyes balbus
This threatened species is native to mountain streams of eastern Victoria and eastern New South Wales, but is now extinct in the wild in Victoria. The major threat to this species is Chytrid fungus.
Research and Field Conservation Program
Zoos Victoria is currently undertaking research into the impacts of Chytrid fungus on wild frog populations in Victoria, through a combination of monitoring of wild populations and releases of frogs born in our zoos.
Australasian Frog Conservation Programs - ARAZPA
In addition, Zoos Victoria has committed to raising funds for the Australasian Regional Association of Zoological Parks and Aquaria (ARAZPA), which will be used to fund frog conservation programs within the Australasian and Asian regions as part of the 2008 Year of the Frog Campaign.
