Platypus pair Binarri and Barak courting in the BHP Platypussary

Sanctuary expecting Platypus puggles

Healesville Sanctuary is expecting the pitter patter of Platypus puggles very soon.

Platypus pair Binarri and Barak have been spotted courting in the BHP Platypussary.

The rare courtship display was captured by Senior Keeper Jason Bell.

Senior Keeper Ian Elton has also observed the female Platypus Binarri taking nesting materials into her dirt tank where she would lay eggsa nd raise her young.

"Binarri's fur condition changes as she prepares to raise her young," Mr Elton said. "It was lovely to watch her and Barak chasing each other's tail then rolling in the water. It is extremely unusual to see this display and we were thrilled Jason was able to capture it with his camera."

Last year the pair successfully produced twins, Burrun and Waddiring, who have just celebrated their first birhday. If the pair successfully breed for the second season, it will be a world first.
