Our Environmental Footprint

To be green we follow very simple concepts:

  • Consume less
  • Be more efficient
  • Don't Waste
  • Recycle Everything
  • Buy Green

To gauge our impact on the environment, we monitor and measure our:

  • Consumption of resources such as electricity, gas, water and paper.
  • Waste produced and recycled.
  • Amount of green products and services.
  • Amount of greenhouse gas we emit from our operations.

Some results from our current footprint.

Greenhouse gas (Carbon equivalent - CO2e) emissions from our operations:

ZV Carbon Pie

We reduced Greenhouse gases by 5% (422 CO2-e) from 2006-2007 emissions.

Waste produced and recycled:

  2006 - 072007 - 08  Improvement
Waste To Landfill (tonnes)  500 292 208
Recycled Waste (tonnes) 1311 1020 291
Total Waste produced (tonnes) 1811 1312 499
% Recycling  72% 78% 6%

We reduced our waste to landfill by 42% (208 tonnes) and total waste by 28% (499 tonnes) from 2006-2007 data. We also increased our recycling rate from 72% to 78%.

We have improved ‘other' plastics recycling across all 3 campuses. As such all plastics from our operations are now recycled. Some plastics are returned as park benches and bollards.

Overall we recycle ink cartridges, chemicals, fluorescent tubes, motor oils, asphalt, window glass, metals, timber, concrete, batteries, soil and rocks, glass, cans, paper and cardboard.

Our animal waste is collected and composted.
At Melbourne Zoo, this material is available commercially as a product called Zoo Gro and Zoo Doo. Zoo Gro is sold in all good nurseries and garden centres. Zoo Doo is sold by Plants Plus nurseries, Thrifty Link and Home Hardware stores.
At Healesvilles Sanctuary, animal waste is processed on site by a worm farm. All composted material is returned on to the site as soil conditioners and fertilizers.
At Werribee Open Range Zoo, all animal waste is composted on site and the material used on site as soil conditioners.
