Werribee Open Range Zoo has won yet another award for Education Excellence.

The Zoo's Investing in Nesting program won the Australasian Regional Zoological Parks and Aquaria (ARAZPA) education award.

It is the third consecutive win for Werribee Open Range Zoo's Experiences and Learning team and the fifth consecutive win for Zoos Victoria.

The Investing in Nesting initiative inspires students to build artificial nesting boxes for native hollow-dwelling species.

Students are invited to take action for wildlife by becoming either a nest box construction school or a next box recipient school.

More than 80 nest boxes have been created by secondary school students for five different native species and 52 primary schools have erected nest boxes in their local area.

Werribee Open Range Zoo's Learning Experiences Manager, Kylie Gordon, said the program was reaping amazing results since its inception almost two years ago when McKillop College became the first school to join the program.

"Students have provided crucial habitats for many hollow dwelling species. These include mammals, amphibians, birds, reptiles and insects," Ms Gordon said.

"The hands on nature of the program allows students to connect with wildlife and to take greater responsibility and ownership for their learning."

The ARAZPA awards were created six years ago to encourage member zoos and aquaria to attain higher achievements for wildlife on behalf of the community. The members come from throughout Australia, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and Oceania.
