New zebra filly earning her stripes
A new zebra filly is delighting zoo visitors at Werribee Open Range Zoo.
Little Shamwari was born a week ago to mother Myra and father Christou. Myra arrived at Werribee Open Range Zoo two years ago. Her sire, Christou, was originally from Singapore Zoo.
Shamwari, meaning friend, is doing extremely well and mixing well with her whole family and the other mixed herds in the wide open spaces of the Upper Savannah.
The zoo boasts the largest number of zebra in Australasia. There are more zebra herds in the Lower Savannah where giraffe, rhino, eland and other animals roam.
Shamwari can be seen by visitors on the Safari Bus Tour route.
Her great aunt, Shani, is expecting a foal soon also. So we may hear the pitter patter of more little hooves very soon!
The zoo recently had other gorgeous little foals - a baby waterbuck and an Indian Antelope.
