
United Nations has declared 2009 to be Year of the Gorilla. In response to this exciting step forward for primate conservation, zoos all over the world have joined forces for a common cause, Gorillas. Will you join us?
Zoos Victoria is supporting the Year of the Gorilla in a number of ways:
Did you know?
• Gorilla's share 98.4% of their genes with humans.
• There are four widely recognised gorilla subspecies, all of which are either endangered or critically endangered.
• Your mobile phone contains coltan. A metal that when mined in gorilla habitat threatens their survival.
• Melbourne Zoo is home to the Western Lowland Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla).
• Gorilla's express emotions such as joy and distress in a similar way to humans.
