Conservation & Research

Zoos Victoria is embracing a large and active role in conservation - we believe we have a social and environmental obligation to do so. Nationally and globally, species are becoming threatened with extinction and habitat is being lost at alarmingly fast rates.

Each year, approximately 13 million hectares of natural habitat is lost worldwide. In Victoria alone, more than 30% of animal species and 44% of plant species are threatened.  These ever-increasing environmental challenges compel us to further advance our conservation effort.

This is why Zoos Victoria is transforming into a zoo-based conservation organisation.  As such, Zoos Victoria will focus efforts on two fronts - wildlife conservation and community conservation.
