Tiger Tales offers students VCE students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in Unit 4 Biology content through the context of tigers.
Presented by Melbourne Zoo and Gene Technology Access Centre (GTAC), biology students will examine the concept of a species and explore the use of various techniques in the determination of evolutionary relationships between tiger subspecies.
Students will gain in the field experience at Melbourne Zoo, examining population genetic concepts including bottlenecks, genetic drift, genetic diversity and founder effects on wild and captive breeding populations. They will be challenged to consider the impact of these effects in the management and conservation of endangered subspecies.
Using wet lab tasks and bioinformatics tools at GTAC, students will explore how molecular homology is used to distinguish between subspecies of tigers.
Travelling between the two venues is required. Options include walking (30 minutes), taking a tram down Royal Parade or using transport provided by your school. Sufficient time is provided for travel between the two venues.
The material presented throughout the program is suitable as a basis for the School Assessed Coursework (SAC) in VCE Biology Unit 4: Area of study 2.
