Investigating the grassland ecosystem

Investigating the Grassland Ecosystem sees VCE students explore the diversity that exists between animals, plants and other organisms within a grassland ecosystem.

Students will search for evidence of animals and determine the factors that limit the holding capacity for a recovery species. They will identify various plants and apply student learning to determine the features a plant has to aid its survival in a region of low water availability and the importance of it as a bushfood to the local Wurundjeri people.

Through fieldwork, students will research biotic and abiotic factors in a grassland community, revealing how the altering of any single factor impacts upon the ecosystem as a whole. Observation, monitoring, data collection and analysis through quadrats are integral to this program.
