Volunteer at Healesville Sanctuary

Volunteering with Zoos Victoria provides exciting opportunities in many areas of the Zoo’s operations including:

  • assisting visitors with information
  • providing guided tours
  • horticulture
  • fundraising
  • assisting with school holiday programs
  • working behind the scenes to create animal enrichment items

Things you need to know:

  • Volunteering with Zoos Victoria does not involve animal keeping duties
  • Volunteers do not receive preference for paid positions
  • Volunteers cannot commence their duties until they have satisfactorily completed the required training
  • We supply a uniform
  • Depending on the task or role there may be a minimum level of commitment set (ie. once a fortnight)


Current volunteering opportunities

To apply for any of these roles, please note that you need to be available to undertake our Core Training Modules on the following dates:

Assessment Centre and Module 1:  May 8 or 9 and  Module 2: May 22 or 23

If you cannot attend any of the above dates, we will be opening up recruitment again in June 2015.

Learning Experiences Volunteer- Recruitment open!

Do you have a qualification or experience in education especially primary education? This may be the role for you.

we are currently recruiting for  Leaning Experiences volunteers to support zoo educators in delivering fun learning programs for young people aged 5 to 18 years. They will assist with general administration and research tasks and in the delivery of engaging student and teacher programs.

Animal Encounters Volunteer - Recruitment closed

Animal Encounters volunteers engage visitors and enrich their visit by facilitating animal experiences and giving information.

Please note: After completion of all compulsory training, should a  position on this roster not match your availability, you will be placed on a waiting list and be engaged in the Visitor Host role to gain some experience and knowledge of Healesville Sanctuary. Volunteers may need to be flexible with their availability as we cannot guarantee a position will become available.

Volunteer Tour Guide - Recruitment open!

If you have a passion for wildlife and conservation and would like to share this with our visitors this may be the role for you. Progressing on from both the Volunteer Visitor Host and Animal Encounters roles this role does require a high degree of commitment and customer service.

(Australian Wildlife Health Service) Administration Volunteer - Recruitment closed

If you are passionate about conservation, wildlife and wild places, have an excellent phone manner and great computer skills including the use of MS Office including Excel, this may be the role for you. Healesville Sanctuary is currently seeking limited numbers of volunteers with exceptional customer service skills to assist in the Wildlife Hospital (Australian Wildlife Health Service) assiting staff by answering calls from the public and data entry as well as other office-related work such as filing.
