Vet visit to Zoo Meerkats at Royal Children's Hospital

Once the Zoo Keepers managed to round up the eight frisky female meerkats, this morning’s veterinary visit proceeded promptly.

Almost before they knew it, the meerkats were checked, weighed, vaccinated, and back in the exhibit enjoying their post-procedure treats!

Bong Su's Big Birthday

Bong Su's Big Birthday

Asian Elephant Bull Bong Su is the largest animal in Australia.

He’s 3.9m tall and weighs 4,870 kg, and on Sunday he turned the big 4-0, celebrating with his Keepers and a fruit-topped banana cake.

Born in Malaysia, Bong Su came to Melbourne Zoo in 1977 as a three-year-old calf.

As the two spent so much time under water, there were no confirmed matings, but there is a possibility that the two did mate.

Green Tree Frog Surgery

Four recently-arrived Green Tree Frogs had a visit to the Vet Surgery at Melbourne Zoo this morning.

As it can be difficult to identify a frog just by its markings, the Zoo plays it safe by giving each one a nanochip, the smallest variety of microchip.

Wild swan release

Swan Surgery Success

A wild swan brought into Melbourne Zoo yesterday afternoon by a Wildlife Victoria carer was treated successfully and then released back to its home on the Yarra, near the Melbourne University boatshed.
