Male gorilla Otana celebrated a milestone today: his first birthday in Australia.

His 13th birthday ‘cake’ was suitably summery, an icy tower of treats, from green peas to watermelon and berries.

Melbourne Zoo Keepers are busier than ever on hot days, constantly checking on all the animals to make sure they are comfortable.

Keepers have come up with some very ingenious ways of keeping animals cool in the heat, including chilled or frozen fruit and iceblocks full of treats.

The new Lemur Island exhibit was officially opened today by Minister for the Environment Ryan Smith.

Nine Ring-tailed Lemurs are busily exploring their spacious new home.

Visitors to the innovative exhibit will be sharing that space with the active and agile Lemurs.

Baby elephant's first 3 days

Dokkoon and baby take a little stroll

Under the watchful eye of mum Dokkoon and big sister Mali, Melbourne Zoo’s new male elephant calf has ventured out for the second time.

Keepers were on hand to monitor the baby as he excitedly explored his new surroundings, eagerly following mum around the paddock.

It's A Boy!

Asian Elephant Dokkoon has given birth overnight to her second calf.

Born at 2:40am and weighing in at 131 kilograms, the male calf is the fourth Asian Elephant to be born at Melbourne Zoo.

Zoo Mourns Loss

The entire team at Zoos Victoria are very saddened by the sudden loss of our elephant calf Sanook.

Melbourne Zoo Director, Kevin Tanner said; “we have reviewed the CCTV footage from last night which has indicated that his death was a result of a tragic accident.
