Lion Johari and Lioness Nilo

Meet our new lion pride

Lionesses Nilo and Nairibi have formed a new pride with male lion Johari at Werribee Open Range Zoo.

Following a gradual introduction process, the group are now living permanently together and can be seen by visitors in the Zoo’s Lions on the Edge exhibit.

Baby Pygmy Hippo makes a splash!

The baby Pygmy Hippo has made his first splash on display at Melbourne Zoo under the watchful eye of his mum, Petre.

The 3-week old calf has been named Obi by Keepers, which means 'heart' in Igbo, a local Nigerian language.

The male calf born to Petre and Felix is doing well.

Mother and calf have been bonding in the night dens, and Keepers are observing the calf feeding well.

Keepers decided to give him some access to the nursery yard today.

Happy Birthday Kipenzi!

Werribee Open Range Zoo’s Southern White Rhino calf, Kipenzi marked her second birthday on Saturday 30 May.

In the last year, Kipenzi has really strengthened her bond with the rhino herd, particularly with grandmother Make.

Pygmy Hippo birth

Melbourne Zoo is celebrating its first Pygmy Hippopotamus calf birth since 1981.

Keepers have not had any contact with the calf so far, but glimpses have given them the impression that it is likely to be a male.

Norton and Gerry

Norton and his very own Wildlife Hero

Norton, a Short-beaked Echidna, came into the Australian Wildlife Health Centre (AWHC) at Healesville Sanctuary in mid-March. He was found wandering around near the road and was rescued by a member of the public.
