Zoo Keeper Claire Gilder knows a thing or two about birds, and has something to chirp about, landing a job at Healesville Sanctuary looking after some of Australia’s rarest and quirkiest feathered friends.

Keeper Claire, is encouraging aspiring Zoo keepers to come along to the Sanctuary and be a Keeper for a day. This exciting day of activity is specially designed to inform and engage secondary students about the role of Zoo keepers. Participants get up close and personal with some of Australia’s most precious and endangered animals, going behind the scenes and working side-by-side with the Sanctuary’s keepers as they go about their daily duties.

Claire’s bird round involves food preparation and dish duty, hosing, raking and mulching and the occasional cuddle, “I know I have I an awesome job when I come to work and cuddle some cockatoos!” she laughs.

Find out what it really takes to look after the Sanctuary’s animals by becoming a Keeper for a Day these school holidays.
