If you're planning on enjoying Port Phillip Bay this weekend please keep a look-out for a bottlenose dolphin entangled in packing tape.
The dolphin was first spotted last week entangled in blue tape, in the southern end of the bay near Portsea by dolphin swim tour operators.
The operators quickly alerted the Department of Environment and Primary Industries, and with the assistance of the Southern Peninsula Rescue Squad and the AGL Marine Response Unit, we were able to launch a vessel and start a zig-zag search of the area.
The search has continued over the week but unfortunately the distressed dolphin is yet to be located.
Zoos Victoria’s Mark Keenan, the Operations Coordinator of the AGL Marine Response Unit, said: “From viewing photographs taken by tour operators it appears the dolphin is still in good body condition. However, this sort of entanglement can be fatal so we are very keen to find this dolphin and we’re calling on the community to help.”
Anyone spotting the dolphin is advised to take a note of the location and call the DEPI Whale and Dolphin Emergency hotline on 1300 136 017.
