Woolworths haven’t palmed us off

During the first phase of Melbourne Zoo's Don't Palm us Off Campaign an enormous 130,000 people signed the petition in support of mandatory palm oil labelling on all food products. As well as this, a bill before the Australian Senate to label palm oil has received more than 300 submissions of support.

Fortunately some of the largest food manufacturers in Australia have begun to respond to these community concerns.

Major retailer Woolworths has recently broadened its commitments to the issue in response to Zoos Victoria and WWF campaigns. They join five of the six major food manufacturers who have made commitments to switch to certified sustainable palm oil by at least 2015.

On top of this, Woolworths have kindly contributed funds towards Zoos Victoria's conservation programs. Prior to the Don't Palm us Off campaign, none of the six major food manufactures in Australia had made any public time-bound commitments to tackle the palm oil issue.

While the petition may have closed, Australians can still have their say on this important issue and keep the pressure on food manufacturers and government by contacting food manufacturers and their local politicians with their views, and seeking a response.
