Most students have never heard of, let alone seen an Eastern Barred Bandicoot (EBB).... Yet on Wednesday September 4, 100 local primary school students joined forces at Werribee Open Range Zoo to help us fight the extinction of this super cute endangered local marsupial.
The theme for the Wyndham Schools Sustainability Day was ‘Love your Locals’, a campaign for schools in partnership with Wyndham City Council with the aim to raise awareness about EBBs.
We sent out an invitation to Wyndham schools at the start of term 3 asking for expressions of interest. 5 schools registered and were sent info packs about EBBs before joining us for an online web conference. The registered schools were then invited to the Wyndham Schools Sustainability Day held at Werribee Open Range Zoo.
Their challenge was to research the threats to EBB’s and come up with the most creative ways imaginable to spread the message among their communities. The students presented their projects to us which included making a rap, a quiz, writing articles for school newsletters and websites, writing EBB poetry, making posters, and sharing information with younger students in their school. It was estimated that those 100 students reached an audience of over 8000 people with their work. The students from Manor Lakes College, Werribee Primary School, Point Cook College and Carranballac College gave us hope that the future of EBB’s and other local wildlife is in good hands
These students were very excited to meet an EBB on the festival day as well as meet other local environmental providers and made pledges for what they would do to continue doing great conservation work for their locals. This program not only did great work for raising awareness about EBBs which will help to fight their extinction but also strengthened our relationships with Wyndham Council and local schools as well as supporting great curriculum outcomes.
EBB RAP – Werribee Primary School
I’m an EBB, you can’t touch me,
Because of the feral proof fence at the Werribee Z
I’m an EBB, I have a short pregnancy
It’s only 12.5 days before you see a baby B
I’m an EBB, I want a feed
I like insects for breakfast, lunch and tea
I’m an EBB, you can’t find me
Because foxes and cats are eating me
I’m an EBB, you can save me
I’m nearly extinct, I only live in captivity
I’m and EBB, I’d like to be free, Can you help to rescue me?
Together we can improve animal care, reduce threatening processes and save endangered species.
