10% of our electricity supply is green power. Solar power is used to operate electric exhibit gates and 30% of electric fencing at Werribee Open Range Zoo. It’s also used for lighting at Melbourne Zoo and Werribee Open Range Zoo. Solar hot water is used extensively by Zoos Victoria. 

Biodiesel

Melbourne Zoo's diesel vehicle fleet will be converting to biodiesel this year following a successful trial in 2007. This fuel is a blend of recycled and new vegetable oils, tallow and mineral diesel. Using this fuel has a substantial reduction in emissions that range from 15% to 75% depending on the blend being used. It has the added advantage of using a waste product and using less of a finite resource.
