Twilights 2012 will kick off a series of events a part of Melbourne Zoo's 150th Anniversary Celebrations. The superb line-up of some of Australia's favourite artists amid the magical setting of the Zoo under the stars, should not be missed!

We are very excited to open the Twilights season with ARIA Award winning, Washington. Megan Washington's music has captivated audiences all over Australia with her debut album 'I Believe You Liar' awarded Platinum status in 2010. Her music is pure shining pop with vaudeville jazz, burlesque rock, cinematic country laced with beautiful exquisite heart-broken blues. She is an artist in her own unique realm. James Morrison leads a talented band through a soulful selection of jazz hits and Morrison originals. The multi-instrumentalist ignites audiences with the trumpet, trombone, euphonium, flugel horn, tuba, saxophone and the piano. Morrison, an internationally acclaimed musician began his career at the age of thirteen, starting out playing professionally in nightclubs. Over his illustrious career, James Morrison has played with jazz legends such as Dizzy Gillespie, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, B.B. King, Woody Shaw and many more.

On the Australian country music scene, Kasey Chambers quickly became known as the face of a daring new generation of performers. Her relaxed nature and internal understanding of country music were no doubt key factors in building this reputation. In 1999, Chambers released her debut solo album which earned her an ARIA Award, triple-platinum sales and international acclaim. Her most successful single 'Not Pretty Enough' followed in 2001 off her second album Barricades and Brickwalls.

The iconic Australian rock band, The Beautiful Girls from the New South Wales coast, consist of Mat McHugh on vocals and guitar, Paulie B on bass and Bruce Braybrooke on drums. Their eclectic mix of rock, reggae, roots, folk and pop sounds make this band a popular choice. Since the band formed in 2002, they have released four full-length albums and one EP album and have won an ARIA Award, a J Award and been nominated for a Best Music Video award.

Marcia Hines, Australia's First Lady of song is arguably one of the country's most popular female pop stars. Hailing originally from Boston, the remarkable performer started out her career singing under the stage name 'Shantee Renee'. Hines moved to Australia at the age of 17 on a six-month contact but ended up staying to raise her daughter Deni who also grew up to become an Australian pop star. After 30 years in the business, Hines still holds the title of the Queen of Pop and was recently inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.

Australia-based Lior is a talented guitarist and singer and songwriter. His sound is defined by the combination of a contemporary roots sound with many Israeli / Middle East and Jewish influences. Lior released his first album, Autumn Flow, in 2005. Nominated for a handful of awards including nods from the J Award and the ARIA Awards, as well as being a voracious seller Lior's debut album earned him a coveted spot in the 2005 WOMAD festival, with which he visited the United Kingdom, Singapore, and Korea.

Thirty years ago, Australia was experiencing ABBA hysteria, now we have BABBA. BABBA have faithfully reproduced the ABBA sound so well that they have been entertaining sold-out audiences around the world since 1994. With the look, costumes, Swedish accents and a cheeky sense of humour, the show is a theatrical experience which is sure to take you back to the 70's, singing all the songs word-for-word. We're very excited to have Gurrumul join us for our Twilights season in 2012. What better way to enjoy this unique take on Gumatj clan stories, as he sublimely adapts them into contemporary song styles. Hailing from North-east Arnhemland, Gurrumul is a talented multi-instrumentalist who started out with Yothu Yindi when he was a teenager. Gurrumul has come into his own style, with his 2008 inaugural album debuting at the number one position on Australia's ARIA independent charts.

We're thrilled to announce that the 2012 Twilights season will wrap up with RocKwiz Live – Salutes the Animals. RocKwiz is Australia's original live music television show that started in 2005. Hosts Julia Zemiro and Brian Nankervis will take mystery guests and contestants selected from the live audience through four rounds of questions, before the guests perform a show-closing duet with the RocKwiz Orkestra. Join us for this special night of fun, trivia and ROCK under the stars at Melbourne Zoo!

Your Twilights Ticket provides you with entry to the Zoo from 5.30pm.  Wildlife viewing is available until just before 7.30pm, and the concerts commence from 7.00pm. For the viewing convenience of all patrons, picnic blankets are preferred, and chairs will be located at the rear of the viewing area.

A Family Pass provides excellent value for families and admits 2 adults and 2 children under 15 years.
Tickets for all concerts can be pre-booked from 1 December, either online or by calling the Zoo's booking office.

Any remaining tickets can be purchased on the day of the concert at the Zoo entrance (subject to availability), but to avoid disappointment we recommend pre-purchasing Twilights Tickets.

How do Zoo Members pre-purchase Twilights Tickets?
Zoo Members may purchase adult and child tickets at discounted rates online via zoo.org.au/events or the Zoos Victoria booking office (on-site or by phone 136 100). Zoo Members' tickets are not transferable, and members will need to show their valid membership card & ID along with their concert ticket on the day of the concert to gain entry.

Animal Exhibits

You can visit many of our magnificent animals before you settle in for your evening of music. Selected exhibits will be open for viewing before 7.30pm and you will be able to attend special Keeper Presentations.



Food - Tastes of Twilights 2012

Bars
Twilights is a fully licensed event, please note BYO is not available. Our bars provide a range of alcoholic drinks including a selection of beer, wine, spirits and sparkling wine available by the glass and bottle. Non-alcoholic beverages are also available including soft drinks and water. Please refer to the Twilights event map for bar locations.

Food
There is a variety of food stalls available offering a wide range of popular Australian, modern Mexican and Asian dishes, including healthy options such as sushi, curries and stir-fries, all served fresh and at a reasonable price. Cheese platters are available with our own Melbourne Zoo Bakery’s crusty bread as well as other treats baked onsite. Please refer to the Twilights event map for food stall locations.

All our food packaging is fully compostable or biodegradable. Please be kind to the environment and dispose of your rubbish thoughtfully.

Dinner and Show Packages
Make your Twilight experience unforgettable by enjoying our Dinner and Show packages. At $45 for dinner plus ticket price for selected shows. Dine in our new Leopard Lodge facility, located close to the main stage.
Our dinner package includes a delicious two course meal and access to our VIP viewing area in the open pavilion space. Drinks are available in both areas at bar prices.

Tickets for the Dinner and Show Packages are strictly limited and must be pre-purchased through Liberty Catering Concepts.

Other Information for Melbourne Zoo Twilights

Location
Elliott Avenue, Parkville.
Concerts are held on Melbourne Zoo's spacious lawn area, near the Lion Park and Reptile House.  The lawns in front of the stage make a perfect setting to place a picnic rug and chill out to the summer sounds of Zoo Twilights bands. To make sure that you can attend the concerts of your choice, we recommend that you pre-purchase your tickets to avoid disappointment.

Concert Times
Entry for Twilights Ticket holders is from 5.30pm only. Concerts commence at 7.00pm and conclude at approximately 9.30pm. When a concert features a support act, the main performance will not begin until after 7.30pm.

Smoke Free Twilights
The Zoo is a smoke-free zone, so smoking is not permitted. Pass-outs are available from gate staff.

Minors
All minors (under 18) must be accompanied by their parents or a legal guardian. If they are not, they can be refused entry and will not receive a refund on their tickets. Proof of ID may be requested.

What To Bring
Twilights visitors are not allowed to BYO alcohol, but picnics are welcome.  Both food and alcohol will be for sale on Twilights evenings.  Persons under 18 must be accompanied by a ticket-holding parent or legal guardian at all times. Visitors wishing to consume alcohol must have photo ID.

For the viewing convenience of all patrons, picnic blankets are recommended, and all chairs will be positioned at the rear of the lawn areas to avoid obstructing viewing for other patrons.  Melbourne Zoo is an outdoor all-weather venue, so please be prepared and bring appropriate items for all weather conditions. All items brought into the Zoo will be checked, including bags, baskets, and eskies, and prohibited items will be confiscated.

 

Not Permitted

  • Zoo Twilights is a fully licensed event. Persons under 18 must be accompanied by a ticket-holding parent or legal guardian at all times.
  • No BYO alcohol is permitted. Alcohol will be available for purchase. Visitors wishing to consume alcohol must have photo ID. Anyone found to be supplying or buying alcohol for a minor will be evicted from the Zoo grounds.
  • Tables, tents, sunshelters, market and beach umbrellas, glass, balloons, party poppers, balls, roller blades, skate boards, and whistles are not permitted in the Zoo.
  • Space is limited on our lawn areas so please keep others in mind when securing your spot.
  • No open fires, naked flames or disposable BBQs
  • All items brought into the venue will be checked, including bags, baskets, and eskies. Prohibited items will be confiscated. Melbourne Zoo does not take any responsibility for prohibited items.
  • Melbourne Zoo reserves the right to refuse admission or to eject a ticket holder for behaviour likely to cause damage, injury, nuisance or annoyance or for failure to comply with reasonable requests.
  • In the event of rain the concert will still proceed, the Zoo Twilights raincheck policy is consistent with the normal Zoo regulations of NO RAINCHECKS. In the case of rain, raincoats and ponchos are preferred, as umbrellas may obstruct the views of other members of the audience.

Getting to the Zoo
Ample parking is available around Melbourne Zoo. There are also several public transport options. Tram 55 runs from William Street Monday through Sunday. Trains run from Flinders Street Station on the Upfield or Gowrie lines Monday through Sunday, stopping at Melbourne Zoo's own Royal Park Station.

TICKET CONDITIONS

Cancellations

The Zoo Twilights raincheck policy is consistent with the normal Zoo regulations of NO RAINCHECKS.
In the event that a performance may need to be cancelled, every effort will be made to communicate this information to visitors, through the media, website, phone, signage at the Zoo entrances, and via information from the admissions staff. Considerations for exceptions to the above policy will apply in the following situations:

  • The Zoo is closed prior to 7.00pm due to storm damage or for other emergency reasons.
  • Cancellation of advertised performance due to inclement weather prior to the band going on stage, where the visitor may not have received warning of the cancellation, prior to entering the Zoo.
  • Cancellation of advertised performance for other reasons, prior to the band going on stage, where the visitor may not have received reasonable warning of the cancellation, prior to entering the Zoo.

Viewing
The Twilights event is a general admission picnic-style event and full visibility of the stage cannot be guaranteed.  Viewing may be obstructed, particularly on our busier sell-out evenings.

Refunds
There are strictly no refunds unless a concert has been cancelled.

If you purchased tickets via a third party, please contact the supplier

For tickets purchased on the day of the concert at the gate, take your tickets to Zoo gate admission staff to receive a refund. (These refunds must be claimed on the day of the concert).
