Gorilla Behind the Scenes
Meet the gorilla bachelor boys at Werribee Open Range Zoo. These endlessly fascinating creatures are one of our closest living relatives with a genetic difference of only 1.6%. In this experience, you'll get up so close to the gorilla boys that the similarities are impossible to miss!
Guided by our keepers, you will head behind the scenes into the gorilla night dens where you will get up close with our bachelor boys and learn about the unique dynamics of the group. Each behind the scenes experience is slightly different. Your gorilla behind the scenes encounter may include:
- An activity feed
- An enrichment activity
- A training session
- Discussion about gorilla behaviours, characteristics and conservation
Following the behind the scenes experience, our guides will escort you to the viewing window to catch the Gorilla Keeper Talk.
Gorillas are classed as critically endangered with numbers in the wild falling. A visit to Werribee Open Range Zoo is an opportunity to help save wild gorillas by participating in They’re Calling on You. This mobile phone recycling campaign raises funds for the Jane Goodall Institute in supporting the rangers who protect and monitor gorilla habitat in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Your behind the scenes encounter and participation in They’re Calling on You will help Zoos Victoria fight wildlife extinction.
Please note: Keeper led activity will vary on a daily basis due to gorilla behaviours. All visitors to the gorilla behind-the-scenes encounter are required to wear a face mask in order to protect the gorillas from any human disease risks. Gorillas are one of our closest living relatives with a genetic difference to humans of only 1.6%. This greatly increases their susceptibility to infection from human pathogens.
This encounter takes place at...
- Melbourne Zoo
- Healesville Sanctuary
