Training and Development
We hope our staff never stop learning especially when it comes to furthering specialist knowledge. We work with all staff to help them be the best they can be at work and, where possible, we provide training and development opportunities in order to foster high achievement as individuals and within teams.
Professional Development opportunities
Zoos Victoria staff have various opportunities to present or attend industry conferences or courses to further employee expertise such as at Zoos and Aquariums Association forums and other technical conferences.
Zoos Victoria's training program
Formal training programs are offered across a range of technical areas by Zoos Victoria’s Human Resources team and available to all staff to encourage skill development.
The annual Alfred Dunbavin Butcher Memorial Scholarship Funds are awarded to staff members wanting to advance their education and professional development in line with Zoos Victoria priorities. Dr Butcher played a leading role in developing Melbourne Zoo from 1947 to 1972 as Chairman of the Zoological Board and was particularly interested in staff development and conservation biology.
Zoos Victoria's Fellowships
The Zoos Victoria Fellowship Scheme is available to all employees to encourage practical, experience-based development opportunities established by the Wildlife Conservation team. These critical projects are designed to improve overall engagement with the conservation and recovery programs, and offer unique opportunities to improve skills and understanding of the organisation’s conservation goals.
