Explore Zoos Victoria’s Connect-Understand-Act (CUA) model, a successful approach based on behavioural science.
Central to the conservation challenge today is human behaviour and understanding that being a part of the problem, we are also part of the solution. This CUA masterclass helps participants understand and identify the role they play in inspiring behaviour change within their community, and how to create engaging and impactful campaigns. Learn from the founders of CUA with integrated case studies of Zoos Victoria’s award-winning Community Conservation Campaigns.
Be introduced to Community Conservation as a key framework, underpinned by Zoos Victoria’s CUA model. Learn how the approach has helped Zoos Victoria foster wildlife-friendly attitudes, beliefs and facilitated wildlife friendly behaviours, and discover how this model can inspire behaviour change in your community. Participants will dissect the model, and learn from best practice examples that empower the community through behaviour change, relevant social science research, and activities that focus on how to apply the CUA model in programs.
Attendees will have the opportunity throughout the masterclass to interact with the ZV Specialists and ask questions.
At the end of the masterclass, participants will…
- Understand the role they can play in inspiring behaviour change within their community
- Be able to recognise best practice behaviour change programs

Conservation Campaigner, Zoos Victoria
Pete has spent nearly 15 years connecting a range of audiences with nature, as well as helping to develop and facilitate opportunities for people to take conservation action.
After obtaining a BSc (Hons) in Animal Behaviour, Pete spent almost a year in South Africa and worked with the National Parks’ People and Conservation Department. Realising just how crucial an engaged and active human community is to success in conservation, he changed focus and began his career in behaviour change.
He has been involved in the development and front-facing delivery of community conservation programs both locally and internationally and loves seeing the light-bulb moment people have when they realise they can make a difference to the world around them.
