Call of the Wild
Lead your students to become good global citizens by answering the Call of the Wild.
Call of the Wild encourages students to consider the human impact on wildlife and what they can do to be a more sustainable citizen and save species. Students will observe animals, listen to keeper talks and talk with zoo staff. Informed by their learning, students will be challenged to answer the question, “How might we save a species?”
Students will learn:
- About threats to wildlife and their habitats
- How to join the fight against extinction with Zoos Victoria by adopting behaviours that make them a wildlife friendly Victorian
Use the activities in the Teaching Guide (below) to spark students’ curiosity before their zoo visit.
Connect and Understand
Students will discover the diversity and uniqueness of wildlife, as well as the threats animals face in the wild. Students will take the lead in their own inquiry to delve into real life conservation issues and the impact that humans are having on species’ survival.
Your zoo visit will include: Introduction (for arrivals between 9:40am – 10am), Zoo Teacher workshop (40 minutes) and keeper talks. Check out your Teaching Guide for other ideas of what to do at the zoo.

Program maps and itineraries
Your booking confirmation email will list your group's education workshop time/s. Each workshop time has its own map and suggested daily itinerary. Digital maps will be provided to you on the day.
Victorian Curriculum 5-6
Living things have structural features and adaptations that help them to survive in their environment (VCSSU074)
- Students will have the opportunity to closely observe an animals structural features and adaptations, zoo educators can facilitate discussion about how these features help them to survive in their environment
The growth and survival of living things are affected by the physical conditions of their environment (VCSSU075)
- Students will learn about what impact humans are having on different species’ environment and be challenged to become a more sustainable and wildlife friendly global citizen
Describe and explain interconnections within places and between places, and the effects of these interconnections (VCGGC087)
- Through student led learning students will learn about what impacts humans are having on environments over time and how that can effect places and interconnections within those places
Examine the concept of global citizenship (VCCCC017)
- Students will develop their awareness about environmental issues, the human impacts on wildlife and be encouraged to be an active global citizen to help solve the problems facing wildlife
Examine how problems may contain more than one ethical issue (VCECU011)
- Encourage students to synthesise a variety of information to develop an answer to the question of how we might save a species?
Plan your excursion
Call of the Wild is an outdoor all-weather program; the students will need appropriate clothing for weather conditions. This could include a raincoat, hat and sun protection.
School groups will enter Melbourne Zoo via the Rail Gate entrance. Organising teachers please check in with our Admissions team upon arrival. More Information.
