VCAL for Community Conservation – Intermediate
Students will work together to analyse the Zoo Victoria's "Bubbles not Balloons" community conservation project. They will then collaborate with zoo experts on a plan to implement a similar community-based project at school.
Students will take a closer look at Zoos Victoria’s “Bubbles not Balloons” community conservation campaign, which engages the community in the environmental issue of plastics in our oceans.
They will discover how Zoos Victoria created this campaign to help save species in ocean habitats and use a similar process to address this issue within their own school community.
This community conservation framework can be extended by VCAL teachers at school, to cater for individual student needs and meet all outcomes within PDS Units 1 or 2.
Students will learn:
- The process Zoos Victoria employs when creating community conservation projects.
- How to develop and implement a project which addresses an environmental issue within their school community.
Use the activities in the Teaching Guide (below) to spark students’ curiosity before their zoo visit.
Connect and Understand
Students will have the opportunity to build their ideas, ask questions and solve potential problems with a Zoo Teacher during their excursion at Melbourne Zoo.
Your zoo visit will include: Zoo Teacher workshop (40 minutes), explore the zoo and attend keeper talks. Check out your Teaching Guide for other ideas of what to do at the zoo.
Use activities in the Teaching Guide to deepen students’ learning. After developing and implementing their project back at school, students can share their achievements with Melbourne Zoo.

Intermediate Unit 1:
Learning Outcome 1.0 – Plan, organise and carry out a complex activity or project
1.2 identify and use appropriate resources related to the activity or project
- Students will be introduced to the tools Zoos Victoria uses to connect its visitors to environmental issues and discuss ways they could incorporate these resources into a project they implement back at school.
Learning Outcome 2.0 – Demonstrate knowledge and skills in the context of a complex activity or project.
2.1 Establish the requirements of a complex activity or project
- By analysing Zoos Victoria’s “Bubbles not Balloons” project, students will discover the requirements needed to develop and implement a conservation project in their school community
Intermediate Unit 2:
Learning Outcome 2.0 – Plan and organise a complex activity or project concerning an environmental, cultural or social issue within a community.
2.1 Identify and explore an environmental, cultural or social issue within a community that requires action
2.2 Identify and evaluate a range of strategies to address the issue
- Students will identify an environmental issue that requires action within their community and explore ways to address the issue
Plan your excursion
VCAL for Community Conservation is an outdoor all-weather program; the students will need appropriate clothing for weather conditions. This could include a raincoat, hat and sun protection.
School groups will enter Melbourne Zoo via the Rail Gate entrance. Organising teachers please check in with our Admissions team upon arrival. More Information.
