Education at Melbourne Zoo

Students are encouraged to explore and investigate more than 320 wildlife species from around the world. They can build strong connections to the natural world and investigate complex environmental and social issues across the globe.

    Kinder: Wild Explorers

    Wild Explorers immerses children in a unique child-centred environment designed to foster early connections to nature and an appreciation for the living world.

  •     

    Foundation-Year 2: Wild Explorers

    Students can investigate wildlife through the sensory environment of Melbourne Zoo and awaken a sense of care, wonder and curiosity as they discover what makes animals 

  •     

    Year 3-4: Save Our Species - Local Legends

    Students will learn about the stories of some of our Local Legends and be introduced to real life conservation issues and how they are impacting on local habitats and wildlife.

    Year 3-4: Zoo Snooze Camp

    What happens at Melbourne Zoo after dark? Students will get to know the animals of the Zoo as they have never known them before.

  •     

    Year 5-6: Save Our Species - Call of the Wild

    Using real life conservation issues students will investigate the impact humans can have on wildlife and discover how wildlife diversity, adaptations and features enable them to survive.

  •     

    Year 5-6: Save our Species - Local Legends

    Students will be introduced to real life conservation issues and discover how these issues are impacting local habitats and wildlife.

    Year 5-6: Zoo Snooze Camp

    What happens at Melbourne Zoo after dark? Students will get to know the animals of the Zoo as they have never known them before.

    Year 7-8: Save Our Species - Call of the Wild

    Students will lead their own inquiry into real life conservation issues and the impact humans are having on species’ survival.

    Year 7-8: Zoo Snooze Camp

    What happens at Melbourne Zoo after dark? Students will get to know the animals of the Zoo as they have never known them before.

    Year 9-10: Conservation Leadership

    Students will look at the impact of humans in a global ecosystem and explore the plight of a single species and the complexity of saving it from extinction.

  •     

    Year 9-10: Zoo Snooze Camp

    What happens at Melbourne Zoo after dark? Students will get to know the animals of the Zoo as they have never known them before.

  •     

    VCE Biology: Big Picture Biology

    Students will focus on four species Zoos Victoria is working to save from extinction and explore how we are employing the concepts and skills taught in VCE biology in real life to save these species. 

  •     

    VCE Biology: Devil's Advocates

    Devil’s Advocates is an in depth case study of Tasmanian Devil Facial Tumour Disease. Students will explore how a range of science and conservation organisations are uniting to save them from extinction. 

  •     

    VCE Psychology: Ethics, Zoos and You

    While on site, students will examine how Zoos Victoria employs key science skills taught in VCE Psychology to ensure the welfare of our animals and influence the behaviour of visitors.

    VCE Geography: Tourism's Impact

    Zoos Victoria aims to change the impact tourists can make on the environment when they visit Melbourne Zoo, Werribee Open Range Zoo and Healesville Sanctuary.
