Parkdale Primary School habitat detectives
Parkdale Primary School's Grade 1 students visited Werribee Open Range Zoo in October 2009 as part of their inquiry into ‘Shelters'.
After their excursion the students recounted the animals they had the hands-on experience with. Their teacher continued the ‘Shelters' topic by challenging the students to research their questions raised from the Habitat detectives program and sharing what they had learnt during class presentations.
The teacher believes that as a result of the ‘Shelters' topic, "children are more aware of the animals that shelter within their school ground, ranging from the tiniest insects and lizards through to the possums and many bird species. Children have discussed conservation and extinction and shown interest in protecting the wildlife around them."
Habitat detectives is a fun student-centred program that encourages early years students to look closely at the environment that surrounds them whilst exploring the natural beauty of a grassland habitat at Werribee Open Range Zoo.
