Meet a wise tortoise and hear her enchanting tale!
Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework (VEYLDF)
- Outcome 1: Children have a strong sense of identity
Children feel safe, secure and supported to confidently explore and engage with their peers, educators and zoo teachers in a new environment through relationships and play
- Outcome 2: Children are connected with and contribute to their world
This program supports observation and discussion of animals and their habitat and provokes sustained shared thinking to develop children’s understanding of the interdependence between land, plants and animals as a foundation for environmental stewardship
- Outcome 3: Children have a strong sense of wellbeing
Children will have the opportunity to explore a new environment participating in physical play and negotiating play spaces to ensure the safety and wellbeing of themselves and others
- Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners
Children are immersed in a carefully planned environment designed as The Third Teacher to stimulate learning through play, curiosity, wonder, imagination and questioning and allow for intentional teaching practice
- Outcome 5: Children are effective communicators
A carefully planned environment provides children with many opportunities for exploration and play-based learning that encourages children to express themselves and communicate verbally and non-verbally
Meet a tortoise as you explore, imagine and play in this fun and educational experience.
Our wise tortoise has a fun-filled day planned. First you’ll hear a tortoise tale, then you’ll be able to meet a friendly tortoise up close. Learn how she carries her house around with her, how her strong shell protects her from danger and what her favourite foods are.
With dress-ups and imaginative play, the children can become a tortoise too. Or maybe a vet? Or a wildlife ranger? Our qualified, zoo-based teachers demonstrate, through social and emotional learning (SEL), how to love, care and empathise with tortoises and all wildlife.
Children will also have the opportunity to explore the zoo, engaging all their senses as they navigate the walking trails through natural and built environments. Meet even more animals on the safari bus tour and by joining in on keeper talks.
Children will learn:
- Empathy and respect for wildlife
- About the unique characteristics and needs of tortoises and other animals
- How to explore nature in a safe and supported environment
