Our Partners -The AGL Marine Response Unit Story
Summer time is all about sun, fun, beaches and relaxing with friends. But for our marine wildlife it can be a difficult time as young seals are weaned from their mums and other marine animals deal with increased rates of entanglement in marine debris. The team at the AGL Marine Response Unit based at Melbourne Zoo are always on hand, poised to save marine wildlife in distress over the summer season. The unit, staffed by Melbourne Zoo vets and marine keepers, would not be possible without the generous support of our Platinum partner AGL. This is their story…
The AGL Marine Response Unit’s first success story involved a seal called Geoffrey. He was brought into our care at Melbourne Zoo having sustained serious injuries following entanglement with fishing line. After two hours of surgery and many hours of post operation care, Geoffrey was released back into the wild. Geoffrey has since been spotted by the AGL Marine Response Unit in his local area.
The AGL Marine Response Unit is Victoria’s first centralised point for marine wildlife welfare calls, dedicated to coordinating responses and in some cases rescues for injured marine wildlife.
