Research Theme: Animal health and well-being
The health and well-being of collection animals is of paramount importance to Zoos Victoria, and is highlighted in our Strategic Plan and Animal Welfare Code.
We are committed to providing for the environmental, behavioural and psychological needs of the animals in our collection and ensuring an appropriate response for wildlife that enter our care for specialist veterinary attention.
The physical and psychological wellbeing of collection animals will depend on the suitability of their physical and social environment at the zoo, including the exhibit space, animal group size and composition, and the impact of visitors.
It will also depend on the veterinary care and nutrition provided and on husbandry routines and procedures, including the use of enrichment and training. Research enables us to measure the effectiveness of our animal management programs and improve the wellbeing of our animals.
