Aboriginal Culture and Life Cycles (Year 1-4)
For teachers who want to teach Science through Aboriginal perspectives and technology.
Program description
This PD workshop is exclusive for Zoos Victoria members and CECV teachers. It includes interactive activities, teaching tips and resources you can use right away.
If this workshop is not able to be held face-to-face a modified version will be held online.
Join our Sanctuary educators and Murrundindi, Ngurangaeta (headman) of the Wurundjeri clan and learn how to connect your students with animal life cycles through Aboriginal culture, technology and storytelling.
You will learn:
- How to teach animal life cycles including Aboriginal perspectives.
- Wurundjeri Dreaming stories, seasons and the night sky.
- How to embed Aboriginal culture and technology into your delivery.
This PD supports the teaching of the Victorian Curriculum levels 1-4: Science, Geography and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cross-curriculum priorities.
Vegetarian morning tea and lunch will be provided on the day.
Professional standards
This PD is accredited for the following Australian Professional Standards for Teachers:
Standard 2.1 Content and teaching strategies of the teaching areas
You will engage in a range of biology-based experiences that connect students with Indigenous culture.
Standard 2.4 Understand and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to promote reconciliation between Indigenous and non-indigenous Australians
We will provide opportunities for open dialog in order to address barriers and application of Indigenous perspectives.
Standard 6.2 Engage in professional learning and improve practice
Experience alternative ways to deliver content of the Victorian Curriculum in science and technology.
You will receive a certificate for 6.5 hours of professional development.
