Aboriginal Culture and Sustainability (Year 3-6)
For teachers who want to teach Geography, History and Sustainability through Aboriginal perspectives.
This PD workshop is exclusive for Zoos Victoria members and CECV teachers. It includes interactive activities, teaching tips and resources you can use right away. If this workshop is not able to be held face-to-face a modified version will be held online.
Join Murrundindi, Ngurangaeta (headman) of the Wurundjeri clan as we discuss Aboriginal histories, cultures and sustainable practices.
You will learn:
- Participate in a traditional Welcome to Country ceremony and learn about Aboriginal cultural practices and protocols.
- Engage in practical cultural activities that you can share with your students.
- Experience closeup encounters with flora and fauna and learn how Aboriginal people care for Country.
This PD supports the teaching of the Victorian Curriculum levels 3-6: Geography and History and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cross-curriculum priorities.
Vegetarian morning tea and lunch will be provided on the day.
This PD is accredited for the following Australian Professional Standards for Teachers:
Standard 2.1 Content and teaching strategies of the teaching areas
Engage in cultural-based experiences that connect students with nature and sustainability.
Standard 2.4 Understand and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to promote reconciliation between Indigenous and non-indigenous Australians
We will provide opportunities for open dialog in order to address barriers and application of Indigenous perspectives.
Standard 6.2 Engage in professional learning and improve practice
Participate in learning to update knowledge of Aboriginal culture and its application to your school setting.
You will receive a certificate for 6.5 hours of professional development.
