Ethics and conservation: exploring the ethics trails at Melbourne Zoo (Year 3 -10)

If you’re a Levels 3–10 teacher, this professional development day is for you. You’ll be able to preview the Melbourne Zoo Ethics Trails and case studies, and get the chance to develop your competency for teaching ethical issues in an engaging and non-formal education setting.
The professional development will be delivered by experts in the field of philosophy and ethics education from VAPS (Victorian Association for Philosophy in Schools), in partnership with the Melbourne Zoo Learning Experience Team.
The content of the day will be based on the new Ethics Trail and self-guided program, Ethics and Conservation, which has been specifically developed for the Melbourne Zoo.
This professional development supports the Victorian Curriculum 3 - 10 area of Ethical Capabilities and is suitable for primary and secondary teachers.
This conference is mapped to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. It is accredited for teacher professional development hours in the following:
- Standard 2.1 Content and teaching strategies of the teaching area
You will explore the specially-designed Ethics Trail to understand the ethical principle ‘do no harm to others’
- Standard 2.2 Content selection and organisation
You will get an opportunity to understand the three case studies used, where you’ll meet Fur Seals, Sumatran Orang-utan and the Southern Corroboree Frog
- Standard 3.2 Plan, structure and sequence learning programs
You will understand the tasks set for each site of the trail, focus on the conceptual and analytical skills necessary for deliberating ethical issues
You will receive a certificate for professional development hours. Vegetarian morning tea and lunch are provided on the day.
