For teachers who want to use predators and prey to teach animal adaptations, systems and evolution. Teachers will develop the strategies and resources that they will need to conduct an engaging learning experience.

Program description

This PD workshop is exclusive for Zoos Victoria members and CECV teachers. It includes interactive activities, teaching tips and resources you can use right away.

If this workshop is not able to be held face-to-face a modified version will be held online. 

Gain the skills you need to develop a student-led, inquiry-based method to teach and assess animal adaptations, systems and evolution. Hear from animal experts, explore the latest research, and borrow strategies from leading educators to stimulate students’ critical and creative thinking and heighten engagement. Create a learning experience your students will remember for years to come. 

You will learn: 

  • From animal experts during interactive sessions about adaptationsorgan systems, DNA, and evolution 
  • How student-led questions can lead to rich inquiry and deep, assessable learning 
  • To reflect on teaching approaches and resources 
  • From other teachers and share teaching and learning ideas 
  • To plan resources that support your teaching of adaptations, body systems and evolution 

This PD supports the teaching of the Victorian Curriculum levels 5-10ScienceCritical and Creative Thinking. 

Vegetarian morning tea and lunch will be provided on the day.  

Professional standards

This PD is accredited for the following Australian Professional Standards for Teachers: 

Standard: 2.1 Content and teaching strategies of the teaching area  

You will hear from experts in animal adaptations, body systems and evolution, and experience ways to stimulate student-led questions and inquiry, and critical and creative thinking strategies 

Standard: 3.2 Plan, structure and sequence learning programs  

You will be immersed in and develop powerful evidence-based teaching and learning resources that utilise challenging learning goals, success criteria, and a range of teaching strategies.  

Standard: 6.2 Engage in professional learning and improve practice  

You will explore and share impactful teaching and learning approaches and gain resources that enhance professional practice knowledge and support students to attain learning outcomes. 

You will receive a certificate for hours of professional development.
