Never was a story of more "whoa" than this of Juliet and her Romeo. When Baz Luhrmann cast Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes as the pair of star-crossed lovers, he catapulted Shakespeare into the 20th Century – Hawaiian shirts, top 40 soundtrack, disco balls and all. With the Bard's dialogue retained word-for-word, the story of warring houses is made modern with the help of Harold Perrineau's outrageous performance and mind-bending substances, violent gas station duels and shy fishtank flirtations. The story and its stars are still as stylish and beautiful as they were the day it debuted.

Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Claire Danes, John Leguizamo

Director: Baz Luhrmann

Year: 1996

Running time: 2hr

Genre: Drama/Romance

Film classification: M - Mature themes, violence and coarse language
