What brought the birds to Bodega Bay? In Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 classic, tabloid socialite Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren in her film debut) is so wrapped up in the pursuit of handsome lawyer Mitch that she doesn't notice, at first, all those beady eyes and sharp beaks following her on her trip across the bay. Inspired – if you can believe it – by the real-life behaviour of algae-addled birds, the senseless and inescapable attacks will make you flinch when you hear a feather rustling. Or, when you lay back on the Zoo lawn and notice the dark silhouettes of our friendly neighbourhood bats floating overhead.
Stars: Rod Taylor, Tippi Hedren, Jessica Tandy
Director: Alfred Hitchcock
