Aboriginal Culture and Sustainability (Year 3-6)

Program description

This one hour on-demand PD is exclusive for Zoos Victoria members so you can learn anytime. It is hosted in Flipgrid and includes interesting videos, interactive activities, teaching tips and resources you can use right away.  

In this PD, you will learn about Wurundjeri culture and how Aboriginal people cared for the land and its animalsYou will discover how to incorporate Wurundjeri culture in the Year 3-6 Geography curriculum and a first people’s perspective on sustainability.  

You will learn: 

  • Connections between Aboriginal culture and sustainability 
  • Wurundjeri culture and stories 
  • Practical activities that you can use in your teaching 

This PD supports the teaching of the Victorian Curriculum levels 3-6 Geography and the cross-curriculum priorities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures and Sustainability. 

Professional standards

This PD is accredited for the following Australian Professional Standards for Teachers: 

2.1 Content and teaching strategies of the teaching area(s) 

Learn about how to teach about Aboriginal culture as part of the Year 3-6 Geography curriculum. 

2.4 Understand and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to promote reconciliation between Indigenous and nonindigenous Australians. 

Engage in a range cultural-based experiences that connect students with Aboriginal culture and sustainability. 

6.2 Engage in professional learning and improve practice 

Participate in learning to update knowledge of Aboriginal culture and how to teach it back at school. 

You will receive a certificate for one hour of professional development.
