Crocodile conservation commitment

27 January 2012

Melbourne Zoo is proud to announce a new partnership with Lacoste and Save Your Logo which will greatly benefit the endangered Philippines Crocodile.

Lacoste's iconic crocodile logo has led them to link with the not-for-profit Save Your Logo organisation in order to direct funding to crocodile conservation programs around the world.

Save Your Logo partners with companies with animal logos to help protect those species in the wild.

Thanks to the Lacoste sponsorship presence at the Australian Open, discussions between the company and Zoo conservation experts have now resulted in major support for the extremely endangered Philippine Crocodile.

The Philippines conservation work is Lacoste's fifth Save Your Logo project.
The other projects already supported by Lacoste are: Ganges River crocodile in Nepal; Orinoco crocodile in Colombia; American Crocodile in Florida; Chinese Alligator in China.

Michel Lacoste, the Chairman of the Board of Lacoste S.A. has expressed the company's strong commitment to crocodile conservation.

He says that "Lacoste is the international brand that is most clearly associated with an animal. We are therefore very pleased to support this new project as part of our partnership with the Save Your Logo campaign.

"This operation deeply involves the local population that would suffer first from the disappearance of this species. It gives value to biodiversity by supporting local initiatives such as rebuilding schools and financial support for hospitals."

The Zoo's Manager of International Conservation Partnerships, Chris Banks, has been working with this conservation effort for more than 15 years.

He says that the additional funding from Lacoste via Save Your Logo is "enabling the Mabuwaya Foundation, our field partner, to focus on strengthening recovery of the Philippine Crocodile in the northern Philipines, secure in the knowledge that their operating costs are now covered entirely. This is one of only two viable wild populations left, so it is critical to the survival of this species. Lacoste's support is a watershed moment in the conservation of this species."
