Easter treats at Werribee Open Range Zoo

13 April 2017

The lions, meerkats and Vervet Monkeys enjoyed an early treat to celebrate Easter at Werribee Open Range Zoo.

The animals enjoyed their own special Easter-themed enrichment, hunting for brightly coloured piñata and tucking into their very own (hard boiled) Easter Eggs.

Created by Zoos Victoria Volunteers, the treats are part of the daily enrichment program which includes a range of activities and items to provide variety and encourage problem-solving and foraging behaviors.

Each species is different and has its own enrichment program supported by a team of volunteers, who make, grow, cook and build items to the strict specifications of Keepers and Vets.

Zoo Keeper Katherine Quinn said that the lions enjoyed a variety of special treats including piñatas filled with gorilla bedding and hessian sacks with rhino poo.

The four lion cubs are celebrating their first Easter and they enjoyed battling with each other to break into their Easter piñata to find some smelly treats.

With the annual Easter Egg hunt held on Good Friday at the Werribee Mansion, it is sure to be a big weekend throughout the Werribee Park Precinct.

Traffic controllers will be in place on Good Friday to assist vehicles entering and exiting the Main Drive to Werribee Open Range Zoo, however there may be some delays on arrival and exit.

Werribee Open Range Zoo has two main car parks, with overflow car parks on busy days. Parking is free – follow directions from parking attendants who will assist you in getting into the Zoo as quickly as possible.

Enjoy the long weekend and please take care in the car park, during entry, and, exiting on the Main Drive, K Road and Duncans Road. Happy Easter!
