Happy Birthday Yakini!

28 November 2013

Gorilla Yakini celebrated his 14th birthday today at Werribee Open Range Zoo.

The birthday marks an important milestone for Yakini, who is on the cusp of becoming a full grown silverback.

Western Lowland Gorillas mature into silverbacks at approximately 15 years of age and Yakini now weighs in at 173kg, making him bigger than his father, Motaba and brother Ganyeka.

Today Yakini received a special present created by Zoo Volunteers that was filled with some of his favourite treats including popcorn and sultanas.

After enjoying some quiet time alone to unwrap his presents, Yakini was joined by his father and brother and immediately raced away with the two largest presents he could find!

One of the biggest threats to primates in the wild is the illegal mining of coltan, a mineral that is used in mobile phones and is found gorilla habitat.

Visitors can help protect gorillas by recycling mobile phones as part of the primate conservation campaign, They’re Calling on You.
