It's a girl!
Springtime means baby time at Healesville Sanctuary where this little bundle of joy has just poked her head out for the very first time - and the Herald Sun was there to capture the exciting moment.
Born on New Year’s Eve and just in time for spring, Koalas Emily and Benni are proud parents of this gorgeous new Koala joey, which keepers can confirm is a girl.
She is the first girl born at the Sanctuary since 2005.
Healesville Sanctuary’s Australian Wildlife Health Centre is an overflowing baby burrow this spring. A visit to the hospital offers a wonderful opportunity to check out the specialised work the staff do in hand raising and caring for all sorts of babies. Not only are children free on weekends and during school holidays, from 20 September they can also bring in their teddy or favourite animal toy for a check-up and health certificate to take home.
The winner – or winners – of the naming competition will receive a family pass to Healesville Sanctuary and a very special behind-the-scenes experience to meet the Koala joey, her mum Emily and their keepers.
