Members vote for Man Jai

31 January 2014

Thousands of Zoo Members voted in the online poll to select the winning name for Dokkoon’s second elephant calf, a male born on December 8th.

Mali’s baby brother will be named Man Jai, which is Thai for ‘confident’.

Elephant Keepers identified confidence as being one of the calf’s outstanding characteristics, so the name will suit his personality.

Man Jai is one of three Thai names selected by the Elephant Keepers, with the other two being Sai (Banyan tree) and Look Nam (likes water).

All the Members who voted for the most popular of the three names went into a draw, and one was randomly selected as the winner.

The prize is an overnight stay for the winner’s family in the spacious Grand Victorian Suite at The Hotel Windsor, including the hotel’s famous traditional afternoon tea and breakfast.

The Hotel Windsor partnered with the Zoo in the naming competition in honour of some shared history: the hotel opened in 1883, the year when the Zoo’s first elephant arrived in Melbourne.
