Nestlé Australia is using sustainable palm oil!

5 February 2014

Great news! Thanks to the thousands of emails being sent to companies through the Don’t Palm Us Off campaign, all Nestlé Australia chocolate made in Australia now contains 100% Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO).

Last year over 20,000 emails were sent to companies via the Zoopermarket asking for a future where all palm oil is sustainably produced and clearly labeled. As a result, four major companies made time-bound commitments to use 100% CSPO, including some of Australia’s largest palm oil users. The Zoopermarket will continue to evolve and has already added new companies to the red, orange and green categories.

Nestlé’s recent announcement highlights the continued success of the Don’t Palm Us Off campaign in driving companies to move their supply chains to more sustainable palm oil. We look forward to seeing Nestlé make good on their commitment to have all of the palm oil used in their entire range of food products certified sustainable by 2015 and to also label as such, so consumers can easily see their progress.

Further information on Nestlé’s statement is included below.

Zoos Victoria welcomes this great step forward and would like to thank everyone who has supported the Don’t Palm Us Off campaign. You can join the thousands already speaking up for wildlife and have your say by visiting

Statement from Nestlé:

“Nestlé Australia is now using only segregated, certified sustainable palm oil in our Australian chocolate factory. This factory manufactures all the chocolate we sell in Australia, as well as most of the chocolate we sell in New Zealand. You can find a copy of the certificate here.

This means that any of our chocolate made in Australia using palm oil is now made using palm oil that has been sustainably produced, and is kept within a system where it is segregated from other palm oil - from the mill and through the supply chain until it leaves our factory.

This includes:

  • Nestlé chocolate blocks and bars (eg KIT KAT®, AERO®, SMARTIES®, MILKY BAR®, WONKA® etc)
  • ALLENS® lollies containing chocolate (eg FANTALES®, FRECKLES®, JAFFAS®, etc)
  • The NESTLÉ® and PLAISTOWE® cooking chocolate ranges.

As well, all these products also contain UTZ Certified cocoa sourced from the Nestlé Cocoa Plan.

Nestlé is the first major chocolate manufacturer in Australia to use only cocoa and palm oil that have been independently certified across its entire retail chocolate range.”

Not all of their chocolate uses palm oil, but when it does and has been manufactured here in Australia, it will use certified sustainable palm oil.
