Saving this little handful

27 May 2014

Introducing Orbit, Fraggle, Licorice and Spring, the cutest little handful of Mountain Pygmy-possums you’ll ever meet.

Although they are teetering on the edge of extinction, with less than 1000 left in the wild, the threatened species team at Healesville Sanctuary is working very hard to save them.  Mountain Pygmy-possums are all heading into a five month long hibernation where the temperature is artificially kept at 2C in modified shipping containers. This replicates the snow boulderfields in the Bogong High Plains, Mt Buller and Mt Hotham in Victoria and Mt Kosciusko in New South Wales where they live. Towards the end of the year, the temperature will be slowly cranked to a still chilly 12C.

Did you know you can adopt a Mountain Pygmy-possum for as little as $15 a month? Adopting a Mountain Pygmy-possum is a great way to contribute directly to the care, wellbeing and enrichment of wildlife, both inside and outside our three zoos, as well as keeping updated about the these critically endangered possums. This adorable handful is on display every day in the Sanctuary’s Nocturnal House, where it’s cosy and warm. Come and say hello!
