26 January 2014

Zoos Victoria has been working closely with the Linking Melbourne Authority for the past nine months to ensure the needs of the zoo and specifically our animals are a key part of the planning process for the East West Link project.

All parties involved in the East West Link project have taken the issue of animal welfare very seriously and we are comfortable that the needs of the zoo from an animal welfare and visitor amenity perspective are covered in the Comprehensive Impact Statement.

We will continue to work with the Linking Melbourne Authority and the potential contractors as this project progresses.

Once the successful contractor is appointed we will work with them to develop contingency plans based on construction equipment and techniques that would be developed as part of their tender.

We are comfortable that the project will not have a significant impact on the welfare of our animals or our operations. This is based on the thorough planning we have undertaken to date, advice and guidance from our animal care experts at the zoo and international research.

Following the State Election held on 29 November 2014, there has been a change of Government. The website will be updated accordingly.
