Zebras Atreyu and Shani from Werribee Open Range Zoo have made history as the very first Zebras at Altina Wildlife Park in New South Wales.

The pair arrived at Altina last week and are settling in well to their new home and meeting inquisitive new neighbours, including Giraffe.

The 11-month-old male, Atreyu, won’t be ready to breed for another year or so, but eight-year-old female Shani has birthed four foals and it’s hoped that the pair will form part of Altina’s breeding program.

It’s a wonderful outcome for Atreyu who had a shaky start in life after he was taken from his mother by a dominant Zebra and deprived of food.

Atreyu was successfully hand-raised by the veterinary team at Werribee Open Range Zoo and introduced back to other Zebras before his move.

Together with the well-travelled Shani, who was born in Dubbo Zoo, Atreyu will now form his own herd at Altina Wildlife Park.
