Zoos Victoria Statement

11 February 2014

Zoos Victoria was saddened to hear about the decision to euthanise Marius the Giraffe at Copenhagen Zoo, Denmark over the weekend.

The situation that occurred at Copenhagen Zoo does not reflect our practice nor do we agree with the practice. The policies that guide our zoo and the cultural context of our region is different to that of Copenhagen Zoo, and consequently what we value and perceive as acceptable practice does not align in this case.

At Zoos Victoria, we have a commitment to the lifelong care of our animals and a decision to euthanize an animal is never taken lightly. Our veterinarians only have the right and permission to make such a decision when it is based on medical grounds and to end an animal’s suffering.
