Zoos Victoria statement on Laverton Knackery

12 December 2012

Zoos Victoria has ceased all supply arrangements with Laverton Knackery following the presentation of evidence from Animals Australia showing inhumane treatment of horses at their premise.

Werribee Zoo and Melbourne Zoo include horse meat in the diet of some of the Zoos’ carnivores because as a lean meat it has significant nutritional value for animals such as tigers and lions.

Zoos Victoria has also instigated a review of all other meat supply arrangements for Melbourne Zoo, Healesville Sanctuary, and Werribee Open Range Zoo to ensure that all suppliers adhere to the organisation’s Animal Welfare commitments and comply with the appropriate State and Federal requirements.
