How to join

Join as a Zoos Victoria Teacher Tribe Member for only $72 per year. 

Teacher Tribe Memberships are available to those that teach in a Victorian pre-school, school, TAFE, adult community and further education or university; or students enrolled in a teacher training program.

This new on-demand online professional development can be accessed anytime, anywhere. New PD will be released regularly.

Hosted on FlipGrid, the PD includes interesting videos, interactive activities, teaching tips and resources you can use straight away.

NEW: Science and Ethics in Zoos (Year 7-8)

This 1 hour PD will help you teach Ethical Capabilities as part of Year 7-8 Biological science. You will discover how to use a zoo scenario to explore big scientific questions and diverse ethical viewpoints. You will also download a suite of activities that you can use right away.

NEW: VCAL for Community Conservation (VCAL) 

This 1.5 hour PD will introduce you to the VCAL Community Conservation Framework. You will learn how to use the Framework to teach Personal Development Skills and activate student environmental projects. You will hear from zoo experts and explore a range of ideas that can be included in your teaching of VCAL.

NEW: Ethical Concepts (Year 3-4)

This 1.5 hour PD will support your teaching of the concept of ‘fairness’ in the Year 3-4 Ethical Capabilities. You will explore a zoo case study that considers different ethical viewpoints. You will tap into a range of big questions and videos that will deepen student understanding.

NEW: Adaptations and Evolution (Year 9-10) 

This 1.5 hour PD will help you teach animal adaptations and evolution in Year 9-10 Biological science. You will learn how to use scientific inquiry to explore past evolution and predict what might happen to an animal in the future. You will hear from zoo experts and get a toolkit of ideas to incorporate in your curriculum.

Nature Play the Wurundjeri Way (Early Childhood)

This 1 hour PD will show you how to use nature play experiences to teach Aboriginal culture in early childhood. You will learn how to incorporate Wurundjeri Culture into your teaching through storytelling and language. You will discover hands-on and sensory activities that can be taught in any outdoor setting.

Aboriginal Culture and Sustainability (Year 3-6)

This 1 hour PD will support you to incorporate Wurundjeri culture in the Year 3-6 Geography curriculum. You will learn about Wurundjeri culture and how Aboriginal people cared for the land. You will access a range of videos and activities that you can use in your teaching

STEM and Design Thinking (Foundation-Year 6)

This 1 hour PD will  help you teach STEM in the primary curriculum. You will experience each stage of Design Thinking, a framework that is used to find solutions to big challenges. You will discover real-world examples that engage students in meaningful projects.

STEM and Design Thinking (Year 7-10)

This 1 hour PD will help you integrate the secondary curriculum to teach STEM. You will get hands-on experience with each stage of Design Thinking, which is used to solve big challenges. You will explore a real zoo scenario that can be used level up your teaching.

Love Your Locals – Orange-bellied Parrot (Year 3-6)

This 1 hour PD will show you how to integrate the Year 3-6 Science and English curriculum. You will meet the Orange-bellied Parrot, one of Victoria’s endangered birds. You will download lesson plans that enable students to use their literacy and Science skills in real-world contexts.

Love Your Locals – Plains-wanderer (Year 3-6)

This 1 hour PD will show you how to integrate the Year 3-6 Science and English curriculum. You will meet the Plains-wanderer, one of Victoria’s endangered birds. You will download lesson plans that enable students to use their literacy and Science skills in real-world contexts.

Conversations - Mountain Pygmy-possums (Year 3-VCE)

This 1 hour PD will equip you with real stories and up-to-date knowledge that can be used in your Science curriculum. You will hear scientists speak about the Mountain Pygmy-possum, a hibernating marsupial. You will find out about the biology of this endangered possum, the threats it faces in the wild and the innovation projects that are bringing it back from the brink.

Conversations – Detection Dogs (Year 3-VCE)

This 1 hour PD will help you use real stories to teach about endangered animals in Science. You will hear scientists and dog trainers talk about how dogs are helping wildlife conservation. You will learn about human innovation that also be shared with students to boost their optimism about the future of endangered animals.

Conversations  International Conservation (Year 9-10) 

This PD supports the Year 9-10 Geography unit ‘Environment Change and Management’. Chris Banks, International Partnerships Manager, will talk about Zoos Victoria’s international conservation partnerships. Angie and Augustine from Rhino Fund Uganda will then share how they are working with local villages to re-establish the Southern White Rhino population.

Conversations  Wildlife and Finding Hope (Year Foundation -VCE)

This 1 hour PD will explore the challenges of recent events and how they have pushed people to adapt and innovate. You will meet the CEO of Zoos Victoria and the Director of Wildlife Conservation and Science. You will hear stories of survival and humanity while thinking about what the future holds for animals and their environment.
